One of the things that I usually don't have much reason to think about is how servers can have varying requirements for the environment you put them in. Once upon a time this would have been quite relevant at work, because back in the days servers (then often called 'minicomputer...
For a very long time, we've configured our DNS servers through the traditional /etc/resolv.conf method. This continued after systemd-resolved was introduced and even after it became the default in Ubuntu server installs, for various reasons (eg, also). However, for reasons covere...
I have a somewhat convoluted kernel update process on my desktops, and in particular I run the development version of ZFS and every time I update my kernel, I first update ZFS. Lately, this overall update process has been achingly slow, slow enough to make me even more reluctant...
On Unix systems, we all know those usage messages that programs dump out when you get something wrong about invoking them. For example, one of our local script's usage message is:
The university has a (web-based) single sign on (SSO) system with multi-factor authentication (MFA), and that MFA has recently become mandatory even for on-campus use. This change created a problem for a person here, where instead of being challenged for MFA once a day or so, the...
In the beginning, the connections between cameras and lenses were entirely mechanical and relatively simple. I believe Nikon started with a mechanical lever to control the lens aperture, and even managed to do their early autofocus lenses with mechanical screw drives. Those days...
One of the great ideas in Unix is the /proc pseudo-filesystem (which comes from Research Unix). Initially used to expose processes (cf) as an alternative to ptrace(), it grew to encompass an increasing amount of general system information in some Unixes, such as Linux. In Linux,...
Recently I wrote about how firewalls are porous now and said at the end that this didn't mean you should simply accept the situation and do nothing. One set of things you can do is take technical steps to make it harder, such as blocking some things, but another set of things is...
Like many languages and their toolchains, the Go compiler toolchain is written in Go. This presents a little bit of a problem if you want to wind up with a Go compiler without having to trust someone else's pre-built binary of it. Fortunately, the early versions of the Go toolcha...
Suppose that you have a fancy modern server with some fancy modern GPUs, and you're of the opinion that the fans on those GPUs aren't running fast enough when the GPUs are under load. You might be quite interested in the question of who is responsible for handling the fan speed,...
Recently, via Sacha Chua's Emacs News, I saw a Reddit question titled I've used emacs successfully for decades without using LSP or Eglot. Tell me what I'm missing. This started me thinking about what I use Eglot for and how I would answer this question, because in some ways I'm...
Normally when we need to reboot one of our servers, I type 'reboot' and don't think twice about it. This is sometimes a mistake (for reasons other than rebooting the wrong server), as I was reminded yesterday when I ran 'reboot' on a server and had it hang during the reboot proce...
There once was a time when you could more or less keep people from making holes in your firewall for inbound traffic, so you could be relatively confident that your systems were only being talked to through your designed access points and methods (and as a corollary you could log...
Over on the Fediverse I expressed a grump and a wish:
It's not news that "AI" crawlers are an ongoing plague and that broadly the plague is getting worse. There seem to be more and more crawlers, and they're getting past more precautions. One possible future for the web in the face of this is websites with less features, at least fo...
Normally you think of terminal emulator programs like xterm, gnome-terminal, konsole and so on as strictly user level things, either running on top of graphical display servers or doing things like multiplexing a single terminal connection between multiple screens or windows (suc...
I have an eccentric (computer) desktop, I use an eccentric shell, and I handle my email in an unusual way, which is enabled by ourunusual mail system. In thinking recently about this and other eccentric things I do in my environment, I've realized that one significant thing enabl...
Something happened to me today:
Yesterday I wrote about an unexpected difference in how terminal programs handled 'backward line wrapping', which is sometimes known as 'reverse wrapping'. At the time I said that I didn't think terminfo had a capability for this, and if it did it wasn't the 'bw' capability (whic...
A very simple way to present the progress of a parallel operation is to print one '.' for every operation started and then backspace and erase these as each operation finishes. The venerable ping program uses a similar output if you're flood pinging; it prints a '.' for every pin...
